Pitney Bowes retiree was Mason, active in church

- — Robert Holder of Greenville, formerly of West Middlesex, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 29, 2014, in White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township. He was 83.

Mr. Holder was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Waterford, Erie County, where he was raised with his younger sister and two younger brothers by his parents, Edgar and Esther Miller Holder.

He graduated from the former Waterford High School as class vice president and was voted most popular.

His life was successful in every meaningful way. After settling in West Middlesex, he built his own house where he and his wife of 56 years raised three children.

Bob served faithfully at West Middlesex United Methodist Church and maintained an attitude of service to others throughout his life. Service to God was a primary focus. He sang in his church choir and served as a Sunday school teacher, lay leader and in many other positions. He also participated in numerous mission trips to Henderson Settlement, Ky.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Edgar, Bob was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Eureka Lodge, where he was a master Mason and became the youngest worshipful master at age 26.

As a lover of the outdoors, he enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting and was generally known to be able to fix anything.

After retirement in 1990 from Pitney Bowes, he threw himself into his passion of gardening and raising fruit.

Always seeking adventure, he and his wife enjoyed traveling, visiting multiple countries including his favorite trip to Botswana for an African safari.

Bob will be remembered for his quick wit and smile, happy demeanor and eagerness to help and give kindness to others, both friends and strangers.

His final years were in Greenville where he enjoyed being close to family, especially spending time with his five grandchildren.

Surviving are: his wife, Barbara; his daughter, Robin and her  husband Chic; his sons, Chip and his wife Merry-Jo; and David and his wife Christine; his grandchildren, Casslyn, Robb, Calissa, Jocelyn and Jacob Holder; his sister, Constance Close and her husband Calvin; his brothers, Donald and his wife Donna; and Thomas and his wife Lori; and many nieces and nephews.
