John E. ‘Gene’ McGhee

Sharon Steel retiree, farmer also drove truck

- — John E. “Gene” McGhee of Delaware Road, Fredonia, formerly of Pew Road, Mercer, passed away at 10:37 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, in his residence with his family by his side, after a period of declining health. He was 81.

Mr. McGhee was born Dec. 1, 1932, in Elkins, W.Va., a son of John T. and Ezlie Carter McGhee.

He had been employed with the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant, having retired after 33 years of service. He also was a self-employed farmer in Jefferson Township. Through the years and into his retirement, he continued to drive truck for Martuccio Asphalt and Paving, Sharon.

He was a member of Fredonia United Methodist Church.

Mr. McGhee served proudly with the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage.

On Oct. 14, 1956, he married the former Helen M. Clinefelter, who preceded him in death Dec. 26, 2008.

He is survived by: two sons, Timothy E. McGhee and his wife Patricia, Greenville; and Terry R. McGhee and his wife Ellen, Savannah, Ga.; two daughters, Cynthia M. Reynolds and her husband Tim, Mercer; and Cathy S. Ringer and her husband John, Fredonia; three sisters, Hazel Guiler and her husband Charles, and Sandy Addison, all Mercer; and Shirley Fisher, Chardon, Ohio; two brothers, Bob McGhee and his wife Edith, Mercer; and Dave McGhee and his wife Judy, Fredonia; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Amon; and a brother, Harold “Butch” McGhee.

Interment: Will follow at Mount Washington Cemetery, Jefferson Township.
