Doris M. Kougher

Relay for Life participant was active in church

- — A funeral service will be held Thursday for Doris M. Kougher of 31 Quarry Hill Road, Hempfield Township.. She passed away at 11:05 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, in White- Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township, after an extended illness. She was 85.

Mrs. Kougher was born Feb. 13, 1928, in Stoneboro to Thomas and Mabel Kingsbury Proud.

Since 1988, she had been a member of Old Salem United Methodist Church in Greenville. She was very active in the church for several years, serving as secretary in the women’s group of the church and singing in the choir.

Doris was a 1946 graduate of the former Penn High School in Greenville. She worked at the Jordon Theater, the Lewis Shop and Joe Mulvy’s Printing. For 18 years, Doris worked in the dietary department at White-Cliff.

As a cancer survivor, she participated in Relay for Life in Mercer for more than a decade.

She loved music and was a beautiful soprano singer. She liked to travel and bird watch.

Doris also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and loved seeing and spending time with her great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Martha Pesek and Julia E. Snyder; a brother, Donald Proud; and her son, Gary Brian Kougher.

Her husband, David O. Kougher, whom she married Oct. 11, 1947, survives at home.

Doris is also survived by: two sons, Darrell K. Kougher and his wife Judith D., Greenville; and Randall L. Kougher, California; two grandchildren, Abby N. Keil and her husband Brian, Pittsburgh; and Kelli E. Chaffee and her husband Jeffrey, Hermitage; two great-grandchildren, Sean R. Chaffee and Annalise M. Chaffee, both Hermitage; and several nieces.

Memorial contributions may be made to Relay for Life of Mercer, Cool Beans Team at American Cancer Society, 3208 Wilmington Road, New Castle.
