James R. Patsey

Educator ran marathons, was Yankee Run starter

---- — James R. Patsey of Brookfield passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, in his home. He was 62.

Mr. Patsey was born June 14, 1950, in Sharon, a son of Joseph and Josephine Kollar Patsey.

Jim was an 1968 alumni of Brookfield High School and went on to graduate from Youngstown State University in 1972 with a bachelor of science degree in education. He furthered his education at Westminster College, New Wilmington, graduating in 1980 with a master of education degree. He also completed courses at Kent (Ohio) State University as well as Ashland (Ohio) University.

He was a deeply devoted and longtime educator to his beloved students, beginning his career at Lisbon Local Schools in 1972. Mr. Patsey began his administrative career with several positions for Beaver Local Schools and Urbana (Ohio) City Schools and eventually became a superintendent, serving Southern Local School, Union Local Schools, Black River Local Schools and, lastly, Federal Hocking Local Schools. He retired in 2011 with nearly 39 years of dedication to the communities in which he worked.

During his career, Mr. Patsey served as a coach for several athletic teams and had been active in many service organizations in various communities.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed running daily, was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers supporter and had enjoyed golfing. He also worked as a starter at Yankee Run Golf Course, Brookfield.

Mr. Patsey was a member of the Youngstown Road Runners Club and had also participated in seven marathons, two of which were the Boston Marathon, of which he was very proud.

He will be sadly missed by: his son, Sean M. Patsey, Brookfield; his mother, Josephine Patsey; and his brother, Larry J. Patsey, both Masury; his sister, Arlene, wife of James Evans, Brookfield; a niece and nephew, Nicole and Rob Rainier, Brunswick, Ohio; his companion, Jane Eddy, Athens, Ohio; and a great-niece and great-nephew.

Jim was preceded in death by his father on Dec. 28, 2008; and a son, J.J. Patsey, on Nov. 7, 1989.

As an expression of sympathy, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the J.J. Patsey Memorial Fund in care of Lisbon Alumni Association, Box 421, Lisbon, OH 44432.
