Glen W. Mitchell

Battle of Bulge veteran repaired TVs, appliances

---- — A funeral service will be held Monday for Glen W. Mitchell of 3064 Hadley Road, Perry Township. He passed away Thursday morning, Dec. 6, 2012, in his home after an extended illness. He was 87.

He was born Nov. 1, 1925, in Greenville to William M. and Esther V. Kimmel Mitchell.

Glen attended the former Penn High School, Greenville.

He served his country in the Army from 1943 to 1946. He served in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II as part of the 542nd Anti Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, and was part of Hodge’s first Army.

He learned his vocation as an electronic technician at the American Television Electronic School in 1962, in Niles, Ohio.

He then worked for the former Weaver’s Electric and Fry’s TV and Appliance, both in Greenville, before retiring in 1990 from Dahlkemper’s in Meadville. He also operated a TV and repair shop from his home.

Glen was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374, Hempfield Township, where he proudly served on the funeral honor guard. He was a life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 145 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 276, both in Greenville.

In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. His pride and joy were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Glen is survived by his wife at home, the former Marie J. Baughman, whom he married May 29, 1948.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Linda Crash and her companion Tom Dougher, Greenville; a son, Donald W. Mitchell, Hadley; a sister, Helen Ayers, Greenville; three grandchildren, Kelly Sorg and her husband Gary; Laurie Parillo; and Matthew Parillo and his wife Jaime, all Greenville; eight great-grandchildren, Brittany Sorg, Nicole Sorg, Nicholas Sorg, Michael DiGregorio, Alex DiGregorio, Crue Parillo, Cami Parillo and Madie Parillo; a special cousin, Harry Kimmel and his wife Betty, Greenville; and two nieces and a nephew.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Carl “Joe” Crash Jr.; and a brother-in-law, Ronald Ayers.

Interment: Will follow the services at Shenango Valley Cemetery, Greenville, with military honors provided by the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374, Hempfield Township
