Joseph Pomponio

WWII veteran, laborer enjoyed several hobbies

---- — Joseph Pomponio of 110 Fredonia Road, Hempfield Township, formerly of 457 E. Crestview Drive Extension, Pymatuning Township, passed away at 1 p.m. Monday (4-8-13) in White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township. He was 94.

Mr. Pomponio was born June 7, 1918, in Greenville to Anthony Pomponio and Maria Calabria Pomponio.

He attended the former Penn High School, Greenville.

Mr. Pomponio was employed as a laborer for many years, working at the former Greenville Steel Car Co., Blazon and Mercer Alloy.

He served in the Army in the 101st Airborne during World War II.

Mr. Pomponio was a member of St. Michael’s Church; and a past member of the Italian Home Club, both Greenville; and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds.

Joe’s hobbies included golfing, bowling, hunting, fishing and gardening.

His wife, the former Donna M. Adams, whom he married Nov. 16, 1949, passed away Nov. 28, 2012.

Surviving are: a daughter, Kathleen Pomponio Urmson and her husband John, Cuba, N.Y.; two sons, Bruce W. Pomponio and his wife Diane, Byron, Ill.; and Mark J. Pomponio, Sunzona, Ariz.; a brother, Cosmo Pomponio, Greenville; three sisters, Pauline Mazzoni and Josephine Pomponio, both Greenville; and Edith D’Annunzio, Conshohocken, Pa.; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Teresa Pomponio; and a brother, John Pomponio.

Service: Memorial Mass of Christian burial for both Joe and his late wife, Donna, at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2013, in St. Michael’s Church, Greenville.

Burial: Cremains in St. Michael Cemetery, Greenville.
