J. Hilton Turner, Ph.D.

Westminster professor was active in church


---- — J. Hilton Turner, Ph.D., of Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care, formerly of Park Street, New Wilmington, passed from this life into glory on Wednesday morning (10-2-13) in the center in New Wilmington. He was 95.

Dr. Turner was born April 19, 1918, in Woodville, Ontario, to Thomas H. and Elizabeth Hardy Turner.

He graduated from Lindsay Collegiate Institute High School, then Victoria College of the University of Toronto, receiving his bachelor of arts degree in 1940. He then received his Ph.D. in 1944 from the University of Cincinnati.

Dr. Turner spent most of his professional life at Westminster College, New Wilmington, as professor of Greek and Latin. He was there from 1952 until his retirement in June 1984. He also taught at the University of Vermont from 1947 to 1951.

He was an active member of New Wilmington United Methodist Church.

He married the former Helen Cornelia Herbert on Aug. 30, 1945.

He is survived by three sons, James H. Turner and his wife Betty, McLean, Va.; David H. Turner and his wife Alexandra, Springfield, Pa.; and Ronald P. Turner and his wife Shelly, Beaver, Pa.; six grandchildren, Teresa, Eric, Valerie, Christopher, Joni and Justin; and eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a sister, Winifred Turner Outram.

Service: Funeral services at 10 a.m. Saturday (10-5-13) in New Wilmington United Methodist Church.

Interment: Will follow at Fair Oaks Cemetery, New Wilmington.
