Audrey M. Hogue

Storyteller loved native New Orleans and Saints

-----

- — Audrey M. Hogue, formerly of 281 Ligo Road, Coolspring Township, and 146 S. Otter St., Mercer, passed away of natural causes at 10:40 p.m. Thursday (10-31-13) in  Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township. She was 82.

She was born Mary Audrey Dolese on June 4, 1931, in New Orleans to Charles and Myrtle Sheeren Dolese.

On June 10, 1946, Audrey married David E. Hogue Sr., a Merchant Marine. The family moved to Pennsylvania in 1952.

Audrey worked as a waitress for many years at the former Town & Country Restaurant in Hermitage, and Milan’s in Mercer.

When the Mercer County Career Center opened in 1973, Audrey was one of its first employees, working in the housekeeping department. She later became supervisor of the department, and she retired from the school in Coolspring Township in 1993.

An avid New Orleans Saints fan, Audrey would greet Career Center students and teachers the day after a game – win or lose – dressed in black and gold, dancing, and singing to her well-worn cassette tape of “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

Audrey loved life, and the world was her stage. She entertained everyone she met by telling stories from her travels and of her life in New Orleans. She never lost her love of the city and returned every year to visit family. After she retired, she and her husband spent their winters in New Orleans in their motor home.

She also enjoyed camping, boating and fishing, spending many summers at Rice Lake, Ontario, Canada, as well as traveling throughout the United States. Her 52-inch Muskie is still the family’s largest catch.

As her final act, representing Countryside Convalescent Home, Audrey was voted first runner-up in the Mr. and Ms. Quality Life Pageant held in Freeport, Pa., on Sept. 24. Her talent? Telling stories, of course.

She is survived by: a brother, Larry Dolese; a daughter, Debra L. Wise, Grove City; a daughter-in-law, Brenda S. Hogue, Dolores, Colo.; four grandsons, David M. Hogue and his husband, Marc Cohen, San Francisco; Eric A. Hogue and his wife Tamara, Dolores; Lukas Wise, Stoneboro; and Cody Wise, Grove City; four great-grandchildren, Grayson and Suria Hogue and Carter and Colin Wise; and many nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania and Louisiana.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 62 years on Aug. 5, 2008; her parents; four sisters; three brothers; and her beloved son, David E. Hogue, Jr.
