Thomas ‘Tom’ Sweeney

Texaco retiree graduated from Farrell High School


ROCHESTER, Pa. — Thomas “Tom” Sweeney of Rochester, passed away Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, in his home at the age of 85.

Mr. Sweeney was born May 23, 1928, in Wheatland, the fourth of five children of Dennis and Della Sweeney.

Tom grew up in Wheatland, graduating from Farrell High School in 1946. He attended Duquesne University, Pittsburgh.

For 37 years, Tom worked for The Texas Co., later Texaco Inc., retiring in 1986 in Houston. He returned to the Pittsburgh area after his retirement.

Tom is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Josephine “Jo” Donovan Sweeney; and his children, Thomas E. Sweeney Jr., Timothy D. Sweeney, Mary Ann Blake, Daniel Sweeney and Matthew P. Sweeney; his grandchildren, Mary Shanley, Kate and Ty Sweeney; Daniel, Adam and Sarah Blake; and Jessica, Daniel and William Sweeney; his sisters, Julia Gill and Joan Staul; his nieces and nephews, Judy Bodner, Jimmy Gill, Marcia Baer, Tim Gill, and Gerry Lynn Stefanousky; Kim and Brian Staul; Fred, Patty Lou and Dennis Dondero; Jim, Joe, Bill and John Reagan; Mary Lang and Charles Cunningham Jr.; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Tom was predeceased by his father, Dennis; his mother, Della Sweeney; his two sisters, Rita Burger and Patsy Dondero; and his baby son, Dennis W. Sweeney.

Calling hours: 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today (12-17-13) in DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME OF CRANBERRY, 2678 Rochester Road, Cranberry Township, Butler County.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Wednesday (12-18-13) in St. Ferdinand Roman Catholic Church, 2535 Rochester Road, Cranberry Township.

Burial: To follow in St, James Cemetery, Water Works Road, Sewickley.
