William H. Guthrie Jr.

Sharon Steel retiree owned J&B Trucking

- — Funeral will be Saturday for William H. Guthrie Jr. of Sharon, who passed away at 7:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 63.

Mr. Guthrie was born Aug. 6, 1950, in Sharon, a son of William H. Guthrie Sr. and Betty Margaret Burkhart Guthrie.

He was a 1968 graduate of Sharon High School and attended Holmes Theological Seminary, Greenville, S.C.

Bill was employed at Sharon Steel Corp.’s former Farrell plant for more than 20 years and retired in 1993, when the plant closed. He was a member of United Steelworkers, local 1174.

He then attended ITT Technical Institute, Youngstown, and worked for Brechbuhler Scales, Youngstown.

Most recently, he and his wife owned and operated J&B Trucking for 13 years.

Bill had a strong faith in his Lord Jesus Christ and was an active member of Living Waters Church in Brookfield. He was the church music director, a member of the praise team and a board member.

Bill loved playing the guitar and singing gospel music. He ministered to many people through his music and was involved in the Mercer County Jail ministry on Wednesday evenings for 25 years.

He also ministered on the road at different truck stops when he and his wife were traveling in their tractor-trailer, and participated in many events with the Mercer County Jamboree.

Besides his music, many will remember him for his great sense of humor.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Joyce Annette Anderson, whom he married Oct. 12, 1974; a daughter, Catherine Margaret “Katie” Guthrie, at home; a sister, Donna Lee Donnell, Seattle; three brothers, James Guthrie and his wife Debra, Brookfield; Donald Guthrie and his companion Melanie Martin, Hubbard; and Dale Guthrie and his wife Carol, Masury; and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers and a sister, who all died at birth.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
