Max Irwin Holm

Greenville feed mill owner was college player, coach

- — Funeral service will be Jan. 18 for Max Irwin Holm of 259 Donation Road, Hempfield Township. He passed away at 8:20 p.m. Thursday (12-26-13) in his residence after an extended illness. He was 72.  

Max was born March 4, 1941, in southern Illinois to Homer and Hattie (Irwin) Holm.

After spending his childhood in Illinois, he and his mother moved to the east hills of Pittsburgh, where he graduated from Peabody High School in 1959.  

His academic and athletic accomplishments in both football and basketball earned him a scholarship to Westminster College in New Wilmington.

During his college years he played varsity basketball for Coach Buzz Ridl for two years and varsity football for Coach Harold Burry for four years. Both of these men impacted his life greatly.

He also was active in Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.  

Max graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education and accepted a teaching/coaching position at Franklin High School in Franklin.

He returned to college to earn a master’s degree in counseling before accepting a teaching/coaching position at Geneva College in Beaver Falls.

He was an assistant basketball coach from 1969 until 1972, and head basketball coach in 1972-1973. He was an assistant football coach from 1969-1972 before becoming head football coach in 1973-1974.

In the spring of 1974 he and his family moved to Greenville,  where he became owner and operating officer of Pringle Feed Mill, succeeding long-time owner, Dwight Pringle. He retired from Pringle’s in 1998.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 50 years, Lynda Pringle Holm, who passed away Nov. 19, 2011; and many beloved pets.  

He is survived by a son, Michael Pringle Holm, Fredonia; a daughter, Lisa Maxine Holm, Greenville; three granddaughters, Kaitlin Enck, Alyssa Enck and Melissa Holm; and one grandson, Michael Enck.  

He will be missed by many friends, his caretakers, and his faithful companion, Tiki.
