Quickprint owner belonged to civic groups


NEW CASTLE — Richard P. Hess of East Maitland Lane, New Castle, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014, in Jameson Care Center in New Castle. He was 72.

Mr. Hess was born Sept. 22, 1941, in McKeesport, Pa., a son of Paul and Evelyn Whitmore Hess.

He was founder, owner and operator for more than 30 years of Quickprint Printing/Hess Commercial Printing Inc. in New Castle. In 1978, he founded Quickprint Printing and Copying and in 2001, incorporated Quickprint into Hess Commercial Printing Inc. He retired as owner and consultant from the company in 2008.

Prior to that, Mr. Hess was an independent truck driver for 10 years and worked for the former Van Huffle Tube for 15 years.

He was a member of the Kiwanis, Optimist and Rotary clubs and Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Mr. Hess’s greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. His greatest accomplishment was being the best husband, father and grandfather. He loved being “Papa” to his grandchildren and attending many sporting and other events in which they were involved.

He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Boston Celtics fan and enjoyed watching and listening to the games. Mr. Hess loved the History Channel and car shows and often told many stories about classic cars he had in his younger days. He also enjoyed playing cards with his brothers and friends in his youth.

His wife, the former Carol R. Baer, whom he married Jan. 21, 1965, survives in New Castle.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: three children, Carrie Lynn Mason and her husband Shawn, Grove City; Cheri Jo Winck and her husband Tracy, Edinburg; and Jason Matthew Hess and his wife Leslie, New Bedford; a sister, Phyllis Siwiecki, Clarion; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lt. Paul Hess Jr. and Kenneth Hess; two sisters, Lorna O’Brien and Kimberly Hammar; and a nephew, Paul Joseph Hess.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Box 1000, Department 142, Memphis, TN 38148.
