Raymond ‘Ray’ George Burrows Sr.

Heavy equipment operator was auctioneer, sportsman

---- — MESA, Ariz. – Raymond “Ray” George Burrows Sr. of Mesa passed away peacefully at 7:44 a.m. (MST) Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, in Mesa. He was 66.

Mr. Burrows was born Oct. 12, 1944, in Sharon to George “Kenneth” and Selina Williams Burrows, both of whom preceded him in death.

Ray grew up in the West Middlesex and New Wilmington areas and attended New Wilmington schools. He followed in his father’s footsteps and became an auctioneer at an early age. He donated much of his time helping with auctions for a variety of charities throughout the country.

Ray loved heavy-duty equipment and spent many of his working years building roads and lakes.

Ray was drafted into the Navy and served with the 121st Seabees, stationed in Florida. He served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged to come home when his father was dying of cancer in 1969.

Ray was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, gardening and riding his Harley-Davidson. Ray was known to make everyone smile with his practical jokes; he loved country-western dancing, at which he became quite good!

He leaves a sister, Dee Dee Williams; and a brother, Alan Burrows, both Mesa; and a sister, Arlene Cameron, West Middlesex. He also leaves his children, Becky Zickar, Hermitage; Dawn Schell and her husband Randy, Sharon; Ray Burrows Jr. and his wife Kim, Coulterville, Ill.; and Nicholas Burrows, stationed in Hawaii with the Army; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

His remains will be cremated. A military memorial service will be at a later date per his request. He will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends.
