James ‘Jim’ C. Slater

- — Mr. Slater was born Jan. 12, 1933, in New Hamburg to  Claude L. and Grace C. Beckman Slater.

He graduated from the former Fredonia High School, class of 1951.

Mr. Slater was employed for 38 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he was a machinist.

As an Army veteran, he served in the 82nd Airborne Division from 1953 to 1955 as a corporal.

Jim was a member of Fredonia’s Class “C” basketball state champions, the Independent Men’s Basketball League in Fredonia and Transfer Saddle Club. He enjoyed watching Reynolds wrestling and attended PIAA wrestling championships numerous times. He also attended his grandchildren’s many sports events and other activities.

Jim enjoyed farming, beagle dogs and raising horses.

His wife, the former Ethel Bumbuluc, whom he married Nov. 9, 1963, and with whom he recently celebrated a 50-year anniversary, survives at home.

Also surviving are: two sons, Timothy J. Slater and his wife Kathryn, Fredonia; and Scott S. Slater and his wife Cindy, Transfer; a sister, Shirley Chase, Arizona; and his grandchildren, Chelsey, Meghan, James and Jordon Slater.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Phyllis Urey and Lillian McDowell; and a brother, Richard Slater.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. C. Charles Eckles officiating. Military honors with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds Honor Guard.

Burial: Cremation in the funeral home crematory following service.
