Westinghouse retiree raised songbirds


---- — A funeral service will be held Monday for Robert Ralph Guthrie, 407 Andrew St., Sharon. He passed away following a brief illness at 8:50 a.m. Monday (11-22-10) in his home surrounded by his wife, sons and daughters. He was 91.

Mr. Guthrie was born Dec. 27, 1918, in Blairsville, Westmoreland County, a son of George Wesley McClelland Guthrie and Sarah Phoebe Jane VasBinder Guthrie.

He was employed for 39 years as a mounter in the coil winding department at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., retiring Feb. 1, 1981. 

In his spare time, he enjoyed raising canary songbirds, woodworking, playing cards and traveling. As a young man, he enjoyed playing guitar with his brothers and friends.

His wife of 70 years, the former Mary Elizabeth Jones, whom he married Sept. 4, 1940, survives at home.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, he was the patriarch of his family and will be sadly missed by all.

In addition to his wife, he leaves three sons, Robert Allen Guthrie and his wife Teryl; and Frank Guthrie and his wife Marge, all Hermitage; and John Guthrie, at home; and three daughters, Joyce Knapp and her husband James, Sharon; Mary Ann Pepe, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Judith Shaffer and her husband Dennis, Hermitage.

He also leaves his 16 grandchildren, Lynda and her husband Alan Rea, Portage, Mich.; Robert J. Guthrie, Grove City; Kenneth Guthrie and his wife Tammy, Sharon; Brian Guthrie and his wife Rebecca, Pottstown, Pa.; Jeanette (Knapp) and her husband Walter Shaffer, Horseshoe Run, W.Va.; James Knapp and his wife Evann, Hermitage; Laurie Knapp, Sharon; Jeffrey Knapp and his wife Sheila, Erie; Bradley Knapp and his wife Summer, Sharpsville; Craig Guthrie and his companion Nicole, Sharon; Melissa Pepe, Phoenix; William Pepe and his wife Selina, Surprise, Ariz.; Erica (Shaffer) and her husband Todd Burns, Conway, S.C.; David Shaffer, Hermitage; Jennifer Shaffer, Erie; and Denise Shaffer, South Park, Pa.; 21 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Guthrie was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Dorothy Louise Guthrie; five brothers, Frank, Sylvan, Wesley, Chester and William Guthrie; four sisters, Augusta Fannie Shank, Sylvania Brannon, Dorothy Romaine Bert and Mary Helen (Jones) Marrie.

The family wishes to thank Sharon Regional Hospice and Palliative Care staff for their help and care of Mr. Guthrie during his brief illness.
