Delphine Camerlengo Zarella, of Masury, passed away peacefully at 7:30 a.m. Saturday (3-23-13) in O’Brien Memorial Nursing Home, Masury. She was 89.
Mrs. Zarella was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Harveyton, Ky., a daughter of Jerry and Jenny DiSilvestri Camerlengo and moved to the area as an infant. She was a 1941 graduate of Brookfield High School and attended Youngs-town State University.
Mrs. Zarella retired in 1988 from the Brookfield Local School District, where she was a teacher’s aide for 18 years in the former Stevenson Elementary School. She previously worked as a bookkeeper at Roberts Hardware; as a secretary at Grafo-Colloids Co. in sales and as a sewing instructor at the Singer Sewing Machine Co., all in downtown Sharon.
Del was a devout Catholic and a charter member of St. Bernadette RC Church, Masury.
Having an enormous amount of love for children, she was a CCD (confraternity of Christine doctrine) instructor for 70 years at the church and retired in April 2007 as its director of religious education.
For her efforts, she was honored twice by the Diocese of Youngstown as the recipient of the St. Pius X Service Award.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Alfred J. Zarella, whom she married June 14, 1947 in St. Bern-adette RC Church by its first pastor, Rev. Joseph Bresnyak. She also leaves three sons, all of whom were brothers she and her husband adopted from Turin, Italy in the early 1960s, Gerard J. Zarella, Brookfield, Alfred W. Zarella and his wife, Tina Wortman of Wooster, Ohio and John-Carl Zarella and his wife, Diane Hopkins, of Clarkston, Mich.; six grandchildren, Andrew Zarella and his wife, Meghan; Robert Zarella and his wife, Amber; Melissa Zarella Davis and her husband, Ryan; Christina Zarella Miles and her husband, Devin; and Katlin and Krystal Zarella; six great-grandchildren, Dominic, Michael, Morgan, Chloe, Addison and Taylor; two sisters, Norina Farkas, Brookfield and Jeanette Arcade, Masury; a brother, Dominic Camerlengo and his wife, Mary, of Masury; several nieces and nephews and many god-children.
Mrs. Zarella was preceded in death by her parents.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community Building Fund, 4453 Warren-Sharon Road, Vienna, Ohio 44473.

Interment: St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Hermitage.
