James R. Amon, formerly of 980 Kilgore Road, Stoneboro, died peacefully on Friday, April 12, 2013, after a 14-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 73.
Mr. Amon was a 1956 graduate of Lakeview High School and a 1960 graduate of Grove City College. He earned a master’s degree at Clarion University and was a chemistry teacher at Slippery Rock High School for more than 30 years.
Following his retirement from Slippery Rock, he was an adjunct professor for several years at Thiel College, Greenville.
James loved playing the trombone and was especially fond of a good Sousa march. He was a founding member of the Harrisville Community Band and was also a member of the Mercer Community Band for many years.
As a member of Church of the Epiphany Episcopal, Grove City, James belonged to the Bishop’s Committee. He enjoyed church league softball and running 5K races, and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates and Cleveland Indians fan.
His kind spirit and unique sense of humor endeared him to everyone.
James is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and L. Douglas Williams, at home; a brother, Gerald L. Amon and his wife Carol; and a sister, Linda R. Wiggins and her husband Gary, all Mercer; three nieces, Debra Jazwinski and her husband Eric, Stoneboro; and Kelsey and Kaitlin Wiggins, both Mercer; a nephew, Thomas Amon and his wife Amanda, Pittsburgh; two great-nephews; and his ex-wife, Cheryl Wild, Grove City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Nellie Amon, also of Kilgore Road, Stoneboro.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in New York, N.Y.

Service: Memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday in the church with the Rev. Jeremy Stouffer, assistant pastor of Grove Manor, Grove City, officiating.
