Mary E. Becker

Centenarian was CDA member, bookkeeper


---- — Mary E. Becker of St. Paul’s, West Salem Township, formerly of Sharon, passed away peacefully of natural causes at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday (4-23-13) in St. Paul’s. She was 100.

Mrs. Becker was born Aug. 14, 1912, in Jackson Center (Mercer County), a daughter of Daniel and Lolinna Mae Williams Infield.

She graduated from Mercer High School in 1928 and attended Thiel College, Greenville.

As part of the war effort, she worked in her early years as a civilian in the typing pool in the State of Nevada.

She retired in 1975 after working for 10 years as a bookkeeper for the Scott family at both Thornton Hall Bowling Lanes and Sharon Cold Storage. At one time, she worked for Sharon Regional Health System and Girl Scouts of America.

Mrs. Becker was one of the eldest members of St. Joseph’s Church in Sharon, and also enjoyed attending Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, with her family.

She was an active member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court 507, Sharon.

She loved to spend time with her family, play a good game of euchre or bridge, bowling, gardening, traveling and doing needlework. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

Her husband, George L. Becker, whom she married May 30, 1944, passed away April 3, 1995.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda B. Newton, Clarksville, Md.; two sons, Dr. Paul D. Becker and his wife Tetyana, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and George Becker and his wife Michelle, West Middlesex; her grandchildren, Christopher Becker and his wife Bethany, Marianna Becker, Dr. Stewart Becker and his wife Kathryn, Abigail and Michael Becker, Todd Newton and his wife Julie; and Laura Bothe and her husband Brett; and her great-grandchildren, Katy Daly, Allyssa and Paige Newton, Christopher and Chase Bothe, Violet Becker; and Luke and Beau Becker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Laura Smale; and a brother, Daniel Infield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Blessed John Paul II Elementary School, 2335 Highland Road; or The Ridgewood Shenango, 1 Elston Way, both Hermitage, PA 16148.

Calling hours: Friends and family will be received from 10 a.m. to time of service Friday (4-26-13) in the gathering space at Church of Notre Dame, 2325 Highland Road, Hermitage. Condolences can be sent to her family by visiting the website

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Friday in the church with the Rev. Jeffery J. Noble, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment: St. Michael’s Cemetery, Greenville.
