Nicholas Butchko

Marines veteran was Penn Power lineman


- — A funeral service will be held Friday for Nicholas Butchko of Trace Street, Hermitage, formerly of Tamplin Avenue, Sharon. He passed away at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. He was 84.

Mr. Butchko was born Oct. 23, 1929, in Wheatland, a son of Stephen Butchko Sr. and Anna Jurak Butchko.

He was a 1947 graduate of Farrell High School.

Mr. Butchko served in the Marines as a sergeant in the Korean conflict.

Nicholas had worked as a lineman for 33 years at Penn Power.

In his younger years, he was a baseball player who excelled as a pitcher. For many years, he called bingo at American Legion Post 432, Wheatland, of which he was a member. He also belonged to Shenango Valley Marine Corps League No. 632.

He was of the Orthodox faith.

He is survived by his brother, Michael Butchko, Sharon; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Anne Nettinger and Veronica Bakmaz; and two brothers, Stephen Butchko Jr. and John Butchko.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home with Chaplain Cary Parsons officiating. Military honors will be presented at the funeral home by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 432, Wheatland; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, West Middlesex.

Interment: St. John’s Orthodox Cemetery, Hermitage.
