Rosario J. ‘Sidy’ Surano Sr.

Hall-of-famer, B&LE retiree was active in community

- — Rosario J. “Sidy” Surano Sr. of 45 N. High St., Greenville, passed away at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday (4-8-14) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 79.

Mr. Surano was born Nov. 29, 1934, in Greenville to Colegaro and Mary Leanza Surano.

He was a 1953 graduate of the former St. Michael High School, Greenville, and served as a tank operator in the Army from 1954-1956.

Mr. Surano retired in 1997 from the former Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad Co., Greenville, where he worked as a yardmaster and switchman for 32 years.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Greenville, where he served as an usher.

Mr. Surano was a life member of Knights of Columbus Fitzmartin Council 1446 and the Italian Home Club, both Greenville, serving as a secretary and treasurer.

He also held memberships with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374, Hempfield Township; and Post 7599, Reynolds; and Zion (Ill.) Benton Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 667.

Sidy was an avid and accomplished bowler all his life and had bowled in several different leagues throughout Mercer County. In March 1997, he bowled a perfect 300 and had  accomplished a 7 and 10 split pick-up twice in his career. He competed in several county, state and national tournaments throughout the years and served as both the Mercer County and Pennsylvania State Bowling Association president.

Sidy was also active umpiring and playing softball in Greenville, as well as coaching Little League for many years, and assisted with the creation of Cooper Field at Packard Park.

In addition, he had been a member of the “chain gang” during Greenville High School and Thiel College football games that were played at Stewart Field.

As an avid golfer, Sidy participated in the Bessemer League at Tam O’Shanter, Hermitage; and the Steel Car League at Pine Hill Golf Course, Sugar Grove Township.

In recognition of his outstanding attributes to local sports, he was inducted into the Mercer County Hall of Fame.

Also needing to be mentioned was a passion for his beloved Cleveland Browns and Indians, as well as Notre Dame football.  

On April 19, 1958, he married Joanna R. Wolfe, who survives at home.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Rosanna Black and her husband Michael Black Sr., Greenville; four sons, Rosario J. Sidy” Surano Jr. and his wife Corrine, Hermitage; John C. Surano, Hadley; and James E. Surano, Greenville; and Robert M. Surano and his wife Kelly, Zion; two sisters, Mary Guy and Ann Surano, both Greenville; a brother, Frank Surano and his wife Sue, Monroeville; and six grandchildren, Michael Black Jr., Casey Surano, Nikolaus Black, Anthony Surano, Dominic Surano and Christopher Surano.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Rose Surano, Theresa Watson, Josephine Stanec and Jeannette Surano; and two brothers, Carmen Surano and Charles Surano.
