Ruth Marie Nevinsky

St. Joseph member was golfer, volunteer

- — Ruth Marie Nevinsky of Erie, and formerly of Bon Air Drive, Sharon, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at 8:12 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s in St. Mary’s Home of Erie where she had lived since 2008. She was 89.

She was born Aug. 24, 1924 in Cleveland, one of four children of Harry and Marie Martin Shelley.

She graduated from Cheney High School, Youngstown.

A homemaker, she was an active member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon, where she belonged to the Women’s Guild and volunteered on other parish missions.

Ruth was a member of the Serra Club, supporting the Catholic priesthood.

Having been a member of the F.H. Buhl Club in Sharon, she enjoyed both swimming and clogging in years past.

Ruth loved a round of golf and enjoyed playing many of the courses surrounding the Sharon area.

She was a great storyteller and loved to make people laugh.

She volunteered her time for the Mercer County Mental Health Association and the Prince of Peace soup kitchen, Farrell.

Her husband, Michael Nevinsky, whom she married April 8, 1952, passed away April 5, 1985.

She is survived by one son, Dennis Nevinsky and his wife Marsha, Erie; a daughter, Carol Tice and her husband John of Pequoson, Va.; one sister, Dorothy Fink, Hubbard; sisters-in-law, Jenny Walcott, Boardman, and Kathryn Larkin, Marblehead, Mass.; four grandchildren, Kurt Keneske, Michael, Brian and Katherine Nevinsky; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Donald Shelley.

The family would like to thank the Gallager Unit of St. Mary’s Home for their years of loving care of Ruthie.

Services: Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday (4-15-14) in St. Joseph’s Church, 79 Case Ave., Sharon, with Rev. Glenn R. Whitman, pastor as the celebrant.

Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
