Virginia Mae Rainey

Transfer church member liked gardening, quilting

- — Virginia Mae Rainey of Transfer, passed away unexpectedly at 4:35 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014, in her home with family at her side. She was 89.

Mrs. Rainey was born Nov. 6, 1924, in Sharon to Ralph Glaser Barrett and Elizabeth Urey Barrett.

She graduated from Sharon High School class of 1942.

Virginia worked at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. during World War II, then at the former Farrell Candies, and most recently, as a salesperson for the former Maxine’s Fabrics in Greenville.

Virginia was a member of Transfer Baptist Church, Mercer County Genealogy Society and Transfer Garden Club. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and quilting.

On Aug. 17, 1943, she married Walter G. Holmes, who passed away Sept. 25, 1959.

On July 29, 1961, she married Dale C. Rainey, who passed away Nov. 2, 1998.

Virginia is survived by: her three daughters, Carolyn McCright, Greenville; Beverly and her husband Tom Amon, Rocky Face, Ga.; and Janet Stanko, Transfer; a son, Allen Holmes and his wife Cheryl, Sharpsville; a stepson, William Rainey and his wife Jamie, Austin, Texas; a sister, Sandra and her husband Bob Gardner, Transfer; and a sister-in-law, Helen Barrett, New Wilmington.

She also leaves 11 grandchildren, Brian McCright and his wife Kimberly, Jason McCright and his wife Bilynda, Matthew McCright and his partner James Vela-McConnell, Thomas “TJ” Amon, Erica and her husband Lucas Oxford, Emily Amon, Heather Holmes, Jennifer and her husband Ryan Sump, Katie Stanko, Rachel Stanko and Juliana Stanko; and five great-grandchildren, Christian Amon, Serenity Oxford, Carter Sump, Madison Sump and Evelyn “Evie” McCright.

In addition to her husbands, Dale C. Rainey and Walter G. Holmes, she was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Glaser Barrett; her mother, Elizabeth Barrett-Winner; a sister, Betty Meenihan; a brother, William Barrett; a son-in-law, Stanley McCright; and a grandson, Stephen McCright.
