Alfred L. ‘Al’ Gilson

NASCAR fan retired from Kalas Manufacturing


---- — Alfred L. “Al” Gilson, Hempfield Township, formerly of Hermitage, passed away unexpectedly at 12:18 a.m. Sunday (7-21-13) in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon Greenville. He was 75.

Al was born Jan. 29, 1938, in Jamestown to Orval and Alberta Hittle Gilson.

He was a 1957 graduate of the former Fredonia-Delaware High School, where he excelled in basketball.  

Al was a coil winder at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. After the plant closed, he moved to Lebanon, Pa., where he worked for, and eventually retired from, Kalas Manufacturing Inc.

He followed NASCAR, and enjoyed going to the races, as well as following high school wrestling.  

He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their events.  

He was of the Protestant faith.

Al is survived by: his wife, Carol E. (Brauchle) Gilson; his former wife, Dorothy “Dot” Gilson-Dyll, Greenville; two sons, Randy Gilson, Greenville; and Russell Dean Gilson, Lebanon; a brother, Orval “Duke” Gilson, Mercer; three sisters, Margaret Schweikert, Hadley; Sara Patterson and her husband, Wayne, Hot Springs, Ark.; and Madylon Bromley and her husband, John, Fredonia; a stepbrother, Larry Diefenderfer and his wife, Carol, Enterprise, Ala.; a stepsister, Vonna Murrin and her husband, Bill, Greenville; six grandchildren, Nicole Habel and her husband, Rocky, Pittsburgh; Brandon Hoover and Brooke Hoover, both Greenville; and Lindsey Thone and her husband, Danny, Natalie Gilson and Adam Gilson, all Lebanon; two great-grandchildren, Olivia Gall and Jackson Habel; a stepson, Keith Riccardi and his wife Richelle and their family and a stepdaughter, Cheryl Harper and her family, all of Hermitage.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: a daughter, Rhonda Hoover; an infant son, Ronald Gilson; a daughter-in-law, Linda Gilson; a brother, James Gilson; and four sisters, Alice Glunt, Elizabeth Wheaton, Phyllis Redmond and Cathy Amburgey.

Service: Funeral and committal services at 7 p.m. Tuesday (7-23-13) in the funeral home, with Bill Murrin, lay minister of Crossroads Christian Fellowship in West Salem Township and Gilson’s stepbrother-in-law, officiating.

Burial: Cremation will follow.
