Retiree was active in church, community

---- — Arlene D. Hoak of West Middlesex, formerly of Farrell, passed away at 6:15 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, in the transitional care unit of UPMC Horizon, Greenville, with her loving family by her side. She was 83.

Mrs. Hoak was born Sept. 11, 1929 in Sharon, a daughter of the late Gaetano and Julia Esposito Santelli. She was raised in Farrell and was a 1947 graduate of Farrell High School.

Arlene retired in 1992 as the assistant manager of Century Cable TV and was previously employed as the office manager of Cooper Jarrett, Hermitage. She served as an assistant director for the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce and was the director of the former Downtown Sharon Associates.

Arlene was a lifelong active member of Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann Church, Farrell. She was a member, past president and current treasurer of the Altar and Rosary Society; a member of the Bethony Club, for which she was a past president and treasurer; and a member and chairwoman of the Catholic Services Appeal.

She was also active in the community and served as a past president of AARP and the Farrell Kiawanians. She was a former member of the Hermitage Junior Woman’s Club and served as chairman for the United Way parade.

Arlene was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking.

Her husband, Joseph H. Hoak Sr., whom she married Sept. 4, 1950, passed away Aug. 5, 1989.

Surviving are: three daughters, Pamela J. Rabold and her husband David, Farrell; Angela M. Hassell and her husband Brian, Hermitage; and Nancy A. O’Brien and her husband John, Pulaski; a son, Joseph H. Hoak Jr. and his wife Diane, Newmansville, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Robert Wadrose Jr., Tracey Scharville, Billie Jo Bober, Benjamin Hassell, Erin O'Brien, Clinton O’Brien, Vincent O’Brien and Lonnie O'Brien; 11 great-grandchildren, including Hannah O’Brien, who had a special place in Arlene’s heart; many nieces and nephews; and a sister, Marie Stanton and her husband Paul, Denver.  

In addition to her parents and husband, Arlene was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Santelli.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann Church, 601 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, Pa. 16121.

Service: Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (7-31-13) in Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann Church, Farrell, with the Rev. Donald E. Berdis, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment: St. Anthony Cemetery, Hermitage.
