Wheatland man retired from Liquor Control Board

Alan “Al” Varcholik, Hamilton Avenue, Wheatland, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Friday (7-26-13). He was 55.

Al was born July 18, 1958 to Andrew and Antoinette (Ruggiero) Varcholik.

He married Ruth Reichart on June 2, 1979.

He was a lifelong resident of Wheatland and graduated from Farrell High School in 1976.

Al worked for 27 years as a clerk for the Pennsylvania State Liquor Control Board in Hermitage, retiring in 2008.

He was a past member of the Broadway Inn golf league and participated in the city, men’s and mixed bocce leagues in Farrell.

He was a member of the Farrell Italian Home.

In his younger days, Al alongside his father, was an umpire with the Farrell/Wheatland Little League. He helped coach all of his three daughters during their years in softball, having the opportunity of experiencing his daughters winning the softball championship in 1996.

Most recently he loved watching two of his granddaughters, Maria and Maddy, play T-Ball.

Al was a wonderful husband, father and papa.

He loved his family and friends with all of his heart, he was a true friend to everyone he knew.

His greatest joy was spending time with his family and three beautiful granddaughters, watching Indiana (Hoosiers) University basketball, golfing, playing bocce, going to baseball games, and he enjoyed traveling to Mountaineer race track to bet the ponies and shoot craps.

Al is survived by his wife Ruth (Reichart) Varcholik of Wheatland; his daughters Rachel Varcholik of Farrell; Sarah Harrison and her husband Sim of Wheatland; and Jessica Varcholik of Farrell; three granddaughters, Maria, Madalynn and Abigail Harrison, all of Wheatland; nephews Phillip Varcholik of Allston, Mass., and Paul Varcholik of Ovieda, Fla.; mother-in-law Patricia Reichart of Sharpsville; along with numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Antoinette Varcholik; a brother, Anthony Varcholik; father-in-law, Frank Reichart; brother-in-law Michael Reichart; and several aunts and uncles.

Memorial contributions can be made to P.O. Box 623 Wheatland, Pa 16161 for the college education funds of his three granddaughters.
