Helen L. Reither

Business co-owner served community

- — Born in Jackson Township, Nov. 22, 1930, she was a daughter of Norman C. and Alma P. Barnes Oakes.

Mrs. Reither was a 1948 graduate of the former Stoneboro High School.

For more than 23 years she worked at the Shannon’s Kandy Kitchen of Mercer and was also co-owner of Hannah’s Furniture and Lace, Mercer, with her sister Ruth.

She was a member of the Stoneboro Presbyterian Church, where she had served as an elder, deacon, trustee and was a member of the PYAD Sunday School class.

Helen was well known as a volunteer and served the community in many capacities, including coordinator with Lakeview Area Meals on Wheels, Stoneboro Garden Club, Stoneboro Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary to name a few.

She was an inspiration to all who met her. She loved planting flowers throughout the community and was always ready to serve others in need, especially sharing her chicken soup to those that were ill.

Her husband, James W. Reither, whom she married Oct. 27, 1950, survives at home; also surviving are: two daughters, Paula “Polly” L. Slater and husband Dean, Sandy Lake, and Cheri L.
