George M. Leno

Byzantine church member retired from Sharon Steel


- — George M. Leno of Farrell, passed away at 11:15 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2014, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. He was 85.

Mr. Leno was born Nov. 10, 1928, in Sharon to Michael and Suzanna Pollak Leno.

He attended Sharon schools and worked 40 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant, where he was an inspector.

Mr. Leno served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

On July 28, 1956, he married Helen Sveda, who survives at home.

He was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Hermitage and belonged to the Slovak Home in Farrell.

He enjoyed listening to polkas, playing cards and gardening. Most of all, he loved spending time and vacations with his family and grandchildren.

George leaves to cherish his memories: his wife of 57 years, Helen; two daughters, Mary Ann and her husband Sam Zirafi, Girard, Ohio; and Janice and her husband Doug Frank, Mentor, Ohio; three grandsons, Jason Zirafi, Chad Zirafi and Ryan Frank; a granddaughter, Ashley Frank; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Leno; his mother, Suzanna Leno; and brothers, John Leno and Michael Leno.

Service: Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (6-19-14) in St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Hermitage, with the Rev. Kevin Marks officiating. Panachida prayer service will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

Interment: St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Hermitage.
