AVALON, Pa. – Elizabeth “Betty” Barger DePalma of Avalon, formerly of Stoneboro and Sewickley, Pa., passed away peacefully surrounded by her devoted family Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, in her home after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. DePalma was born July 14, 1929, in Sewickley to Guy William and Bernice Gilliland Barger.
She was a 1947 graduate of Sewickley High School and a graduate of Thiel College, Greenville.
A homemaker, Betty had previously been employed by the H.J. Heinz Co., Pittsburgh; and Haywood Publishing Co., Cleveland.
She was also a dedicated volunteer of the Lakeview Meals-on-Wheels program in Stoneboro for 26 years and was a former member and deacon of Stoneboro Presbyterian Church. She then rejoined the congregation of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Sewickley, the church in which she grew up.
She enjoyed gardening, her flowers, baking cookies, playing cards and board games, collecting everything and anything involving beagle figurines or images, and watching sports. She was an avid Pittsburgh Penguins, Pirates and Steelers fan.
Her family – husband, children, grandchildren and little Noah – was her main joy.
She is survived by: two sons, E. Gregory DePalma and his wife Diane, Franklin Park, Pa.; and Dr. Daniel DePalma and his wife Kelly, Stoneboro; and two daughters, Judy Beery and her husband Jim, Albion, Erie County; and Diane Martin and her husband David, Avalon.
Betty is also survived by her best friend and sister, Catherine Mitchell, Alliance, Ohio; and sisters-in-law, Daisy Barger, Tyler, Texas; and Gladys Ramler, Jeannette, Pa.; six grandchildren, Stephanie DePalma Sadler, Samantha DePalma, Matthew Martin, Elizabeth Martin; and Douglas and Mariah DePalma; a great-grandson, Noah Sadler; and many-loved nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 53 years, Dr. J.A. “Jack” DePalma, whom she married July 14, 1951, in Sewickley; her brothers, Edward and William Barger; and brothers-in-law, Lawrence Mitchell and Albert Ramler.
Betty’s children would like to especially thank Heartland Hospice for their tenderness and compassion while helping the family through this difficult transition.
