Mike J. Shomin of Mercer, formerly of Baden, passed away peacefully at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013, in Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township. He was 88.
Mr. Shomin was born Aug. 14, 1924, in Kansas City, Mo., one of seven children of Mike and Theresa Shomin.
Mike was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He married his beloved wife, Catherine Asperger Shomin, on June 4, 1949, in St. Alphonsus Church in Wexford.
Mike and Catherine were longtime members of Holy Trinity Croatian Catholic Church in Ambridge, as well as the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 540 in Conway, where Mike served many years as treasurer and trustee.
When Mike first came to Pennsylvania from Kansas, he worked at American Bridge Co. in Ambridge. He later owned and operated Shomin’s Gulf Service Station, followed by Shomin’s Amoco Service Station in Baden. Highly regarded for his expert mechanical services, he retired in 1989.
Mike was very active in the Croatian Fraternal Union, was an avid bowler and greatly enjoyed traveling, enjoying cruises and trips to Croatia and Hawaii with his wife. Mike especially enjoyed Tamburitza music, working on cars and spending time with his family.
He was a longtime member of both American Legion Post 341, Ambridge, and Knights of Columbus Council 4720, Mercer.
His wife, Catherine, passed away May 11, 1994, and Mike remained at his home on Friel Road, Baden, until 2007, when he moved to Mercer.
He leaves: his son, Michael V. Shomin and his wife Dorothy, Mercer; his daughters, Dr. Diane Swaffar and her husband Dan, Vienna, Ohio; and Cathy Passmore and her husband Steve, Lebanon, Ohio; a sister, Frannie Rodina, Kansas City, Kan.; a special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elaine and Alan Klaich, Ambridge; four grandchildren, Briana Shomin O’Malley and her husband Patrick; Dr. Christina Shomin; Michael J. Shomin; and Katie Passmore; nephews, Dr. Brian Klaich and his wife Susan; and Dr. Robert Klaich and his wife Molly; and many other nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, Mike was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph, Frank, George, John and Andy Shomin; and an infant granddaughter, Angela Shomin.

Calling hours: 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday (7-14-13) in JOHN SYKA FUNERAL HOME, 833 Kennedy Drive, Ambridge.
Service: Prayer will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Monday (7-15-13) in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. in Good Samaritan Parish, 725 Glenwood Ave., Ambridge.
Interment: Will follow in Economy Cemetery, Beaver County, with Beaver County Special Unit providing full military honors.
