Donald J. Yoest

Lordstown retiree, Marine had owned service station

- — Donald J. Yoest of Sharon passed away peacefully at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday (6-24-14) in his residence with family by his side. He was 83.      

Donald was born Aug. 15, 1930, in Sharon, a son of Virgil John and Leora Doyle Yoest. He was a lifelong Sharon resident and graduated in 1949 from Sharon High School, where he was a proud member of the football team.

In the 1940s he was a newspaper carrier for The Herald and had the largest route in Sharon with more than 160 homes.

He was a skilled tradesman and worked for General Motors Corp., Lordstown, Ohio, for 31 years, retiring in 1997.  Previously he worked as a diesel mechanic at Bell Motors, Sharon, and for several years he owned and operated Yoest Mobile Service Station in Sharon.

Donald was a life member of Sharon American Legion Post 299 and United Auto Workers Local 1112.

He enjoyed camping, boating and hunting. In his youth, one of his favorite hobbies was building large gasoline-propelled balsa wood airplanes.

He was a member of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage; and was a third degree member of Knight of Columbus Council 684, Sharon.

A decorated veteran, he served with the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He achieved the rank of corporal and was honorably discharged April 16, 1954. Prior to his discharge, Donald was chosen to appear as an extra in the 1955 Cinema Scope film “Battle Cry,” filmed on location in Veiques, Puerto Rico.

His wife, the former Marian Joan Wilds Yoest, whom he married Dec. 29, 1951, survives at home. He is also survived by one daughter, Gloria J. Mackaly and her husband Raymond, Sharon; three sons, Donald J. Yoest Jr. and his wife Mary, Hermitage; Michael J. Yoest and his fiancée Mary Ann Pape, Struthers, Ohio; and Richard J. Yoest and his wife Carol, Erie; one brother, William J. “Jim” Yoest, Sharon; eight grandchildren, Albert, Anthony and Nicholas Province; Jeremy, Michael, Stephen and Christine Yoest; and Michael Pape; and six great-grandchildren, Haley Paige, Kaden, Elizabeth, Lucas and Amelia Province; and Adeline Yoest.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Daniel Jay Yoest; a daughter, Paula Joan Yoest; and a brother, Virgil J. Yoest Jr.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sharon Regional Hospice and Palliative Care, 2320 Highland Road, Hermitage, PA 16148; or American Cancer Society, 3208 Wilmington Road, New Castle, PA 16105; or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Saturday (6-28-14) in St. Rose Cemetery Chapel, Dutch Lane, Hermitage, with the Rev. Jeffery Noble, pastor of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, as celebrant.

Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage, with full military honors rendered by Hickory VFW Honor Guard.
