Michael Ronald Smith

Athlete, coach was retired science teacher

- — Michael Ronald Smith of Farrell, formerly of South Oakland Avenue, Sharon, passed away at 7:45 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2014, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. He was 80.

Mr. Smith was born Jan. 24, 1934, in Farrell, the only child of Michael and Rose Landa Smith.

He was a 1951 graduate of Farrell High School, where he was a standout athlete on its basketball and baseball teams.

He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians as a pitcher at the age of 17 and later embarked on a stellar coaching and teaching career. He attended Baldwin Wallace University, Berea, Ohio, before being drafted into the U.S. Army.

Following his honorable discharge, Mike attended Youngstown State University, earning a bachelor of science degree in education.

He retired in 1993 from Sharon School District where he was a science teacher in the high school for more than 30 years. Mike coached the Sharon High Tigers baseball team and coached in the Class B League in Youngstown. He was Kennedy Christian High School’s first basketball coach, served as a coach for the Special Olympics and played first base for St. Joseph in the former Shenango Valley Church Softball League.

Mike was one of the top local athletes of his era and was inducted into Mercer County Hall of Fame in 1984.

He was a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 103, Sharon; Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage; and several other fraternal organizations.

Mike was an avid fisherman and a tremendous billiard player.

Surviving are: his wife at home, the former Jane Harriet Gibbons, whom he married June 15, 1957, in St. Joseph Church, Sharon; a daughter, Kathleen Ann Smith, Transfer; two sons, Michael T. Smith and his wife Iva, and Kenneth J. Smith and his wife Mary, all Sharon; and four grandchildren, Michael J. Smith and his wife Justine, Columbus, Ohio; Kendra L. Smith, Youngstown; K.J. Smith, Frederick, Md.; and Casey Smith, Sharon.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to ARC of Mercer County, 850 N. Hermitage Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.
