Marion B. Miller

Renowned music teacher active in PMEA, district

- — Marion B. Miller, formerly of Greenville, passed away Thursday evening (5-29-14) in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System.

Mrs. Miller, a well-known music teacher in this area, began her teaching career in Hickory Township schools following her graduation from Westminster College, New Wilmington.

While at Hickory, now Hermitage, she became active in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, serving the Midwest District as secretary-treasurer and editor of the PMEA News. She also hosted two district chorus festivals and served on several state committees.

She was honored as the first woman in Pennsylvania elected to the state board, appearing on Harrisburg television with two other state officers on music programs throughout the state.

She was critic teacher for the Westminster College music education program, after earning her master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University.

In 1955, she accepted a music position at Pineland Junior College in North Carolina, where her choir toured North Carolina and Virginia. She also wrote and directed a variety show to raise money for its student union and was appointed dean a year later.

While there, she met and married Irving Lawhon, and after their return to Pennsylvania, she continued her teaching career at Commodore Perry High School, where she was recognized with a yearbook dedication and the Golden Apple Award.

She was the music consultant for Department of Education at Allegheny College in Meadville and director of music for First Presbyterian Church, Greenville. While there, she had one religious anthem published and dedicated to the chancel choir. After that, her greatest reward was having a commemorative brick placed in her honor on the MENC “Walk of Fame” by Hickory High Class of 1954.

A longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, Greenville, she more recently became a member of All Saints Lutheran Church, Lilburn, Ga.

Mrs. Miller is survived by: three stepdaughters, Linda Haslett and her husband Robert, Greenville; Kathy Leib and her husband Arnie, Bowling Green, Ky.; and Vicki Coxson and her husband Randy, Greenville; a grandson, Devin Lawhon, Cincinnati; four stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Robert Miller, she was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy; a brother, Robert; and her only son, Eric Lawhon.

Memorial contributions may be made to Arthritis Foundation, 1330 W. Peachtree St., Suite 100, Atlanta, GA 30309.
