Phillip P. Steele

Transfer fire chief worked for ambulance companies

- — Phillip P. Steele, 232 Edgewood Drive Ext., Pymatuning Township, passed away unexpectedly from complications due to renal disease at 10:19 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 53.

Phil was born in Wyandotte, Mich., on Jan. 13, 1961, to Gordon and Shirley Bish Steele.

He was certified as a paramedic and emergency medical technician. He was also a firefighter with FF1, FF2, FF3 and firefighter instructor certifications. He served Transfer Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years, including 22 years as chief and 28 years as a paramedic.

He also worked for several local ambulance companies including Rural Metro, Gold Cross in Ohio and Pennsylvania, Life Force, McGonigle, and Eastern Medical.  

Phil was a member of the Transfer Harvest Home Fair Board, where he served as the parade and safety coordinator.

A lifelong Republican, he was a current supervisor for Pymatuning Township and served as treasurer for the Mercer County Republicans.

He also was president of the Mercer County Fire Chiefs Association and the Mercer County Fire Training Institute, and he was a member of Reynolds Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599.

Following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, he led the East Coast National Response Team of 17 ambulances and 35 paramedics to New York City, and was among the first to arrive.

Phil never told anyone “no” and seemed to always find a way to make it happen.

He enjoyed watching NASCAR and was a very social person who loved being around people.

He is survived by his wife at home, the former Cheryl L. Ammann, whom he married June 27, 1981.

Also surviving are: a son, Nicholas Rian Steele, and a daughter, Danielle Kristine Steele, both of Transfer; two granddaughters, Kyleigh Alizabeth Hughes, Transfer; and McKayla Grace Patterson, Hermitage; his mother, Shirley, Lebanon, Pa.; a sister, Tammy Steele, Lebanon; a brother, Mark Steele, Kemah, Texas; and a niece, Alexis, Lebanon.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Services: Funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hempfield Station One, with Pastor Kevin Orndorff, Phil’s cousin and pastor of Temple Baptist Church in DuBois, Pa., officiating. A fire truck procession will follow to the cemetery.

Burial: Transfer Cemetery with a full firemen’s honor service, coordinated through Mercer County Department of Public Safety.
