Shedrah C. Holmes

Sharon Steel retiree was member of church, groups


- — A funeral service will be held Saturday for Shedrah C. Holmes of 678 Fruithurst Drive, Pittsburgh, formerly of the Shenango Valley. He passed away at 2:21 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, in his son’s home. He was 92.

Mr. Holmes was born April 1, 1921, in Bishopville, S.C., to Mose Holmes and Bessie Cook Holmes.

He lived in East Conamaugh (Johnstown), Pa., prior to moving to the Shenango Valley area.

Mr. Holmes was employed for more than 35 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant, retiring in 1975. He was among the first African American foremen to supervise workers at that corporation.

An Army veteran, Mr. Holmes served in the European theater during World War II.

As a member of Ruth African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Sharon, he served on the senior usher board for numerous years. Mr. Holmes was a member for more than 50 years of Free and Accepted Masons Calumet Lodge 25 (Prince Hall Affiliation) and formerly belonged to Twin City Elks Lodge 187, IBPOE of W (Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World), both Farrell.

Shedrah loved God and his family fiercely. Known to most people as “Uncle Shed,” “Shedrack” or “Coony,” he would help family, friends and strangers in any way he could. He had a great smile, sense of humor and laughter that kept everyone in stitches with a big booming voice.

His wife, the former Susie Lee Williams Adams, whom he married in December 1996, survives in Farrell.

Also surviving are: his daughter, Cynthia E. Holmes-Martin, Farrell; his son, Cornelius Holmes and his wife Myrna, Pittsburgh; his stepchildren, Prentis Adams and his wife Tonia, Arkansas; Phillip Adams and his wife Debbie, North Carolina; Elais Graham and his wife Sylvia, North Carolina; Linda Scarbrough and her husband Ronald, Farrell; and Marie Graham, Michigan; his grandchildren, Courtney L. Holmes, Jordan E. Holmes, Christian Walker, Santana Goodrich and Jennifer Morgan; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, six sisters and a stepson, Stafford Adams.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church with the Rev. Geraldine Williams, pastor, officiating.

Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage, with military honors rendered by Veterans of Foreign Wars Murray-Bell  Post 7597, Farrell.
