A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday for Margaret A. Dekanich of Sample Road, Hermitage. She passed away peacefully of natural causes at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday (1-28-14) in Hospitality Care Center, Hermitage, after an extended illness. She was 96.
Mrs. Dekanich was born Dec. 15, 1917, in Farrell, the youngest of 10 children born to Ivan and Anna Papas Slunisky.
She attended the former one-room schoolhouse 17 in what was then Hickory Township.
Margaret worked in housekeeping for Hermitage School District for more than 20 years. She also worked at one time as the head chef and cook for the once-popular Holiday Inn restaurant, South Hermitage Road, Hermitage.
She was a member of St. Anthony’s Church, Sharon.
In her spare time, she loved to cook for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren. She will be remembered for the elaborate and delicious feasts that she enjoyed preparing through the holidays. She will be sadly missed.
Her husband, the former Joseph Dekanich, whom she married June 1, 1940, passed away Nov. 20, 1966.
She leaves her daughter, Carolyn D. Kurz and her husband Robert A., Hermitage; her son, Steven John Dekanich and his wife Aloysia, Louisville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Cherie Layshock and her husband Donald; Robert Kurz and his wife Anna; and Annette Dekanich; seven great-grandchildren, Justin, Brittany, Patrick, Mikhaila, Sixten, Gustav and Ludvig; and three great-great-grandchildren, Sebastian, Jordan and Ethan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Steve Slunisky; and eight sisters, an infant, Mary Slunisky; and Dora Detelich, Katie Podleyon, Josephine Spicko, Pavica Bracus, Manda Vrbanac, Helen Hutinez and Anna Zalac Reljanovic.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Friday (1-31-14) in St. Anthony’s Church, Sharon, with the Rev. Charles Skinner, retired Diocesan priest, as celebrant. A procession will leave for the church at 9:30 a.m.
Interment: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery, Hermitage.
