Curtis ‘Curt’ M. Farringer

Retired Army major worked for U.S. Steel

- — Private services were held today for Curtis “Curt” M. Farringer, a resident of The Villas at St. Paul’s, West Salem Township, formerly of Hermitage, where he lived with his family for more than 50 years. He passed away peacefully at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday (1-29-14) in his residence at The Villas. He was 93 years old.

Mr. Farringer was born July 14, 1920, in Sharon, one of four children born to Walter and Mabel Miller Farringer.

Having been raised in Sharon, he graduated from Sharon High School in 1940, excelling in basketball and earning a letter in track and field.

After working for a short time at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., Curt moved to Los Angeles to work for Lockheed Martin.

He became engaged to Margaret “Betty” Sisk, also of Sharon, and soon after was transferred to Dublin, Ireland, to work at Lockheed’s Ireland operations. While living in Ireland, Curt played for Lockheed’s international basketball team.

Having served with both the Army and Army Reserves, he did a tour of duty in the Philippine Islands and was honorably discharged with the rank of major.

Upon his return to Sharon, Curt married the former Betty Sisk and gained employment with U.S. Steel in its Masury plant, where he worked as the plant engineer.

He and Betty enjoyed dancing most every week with Betty’s sister, Jane, and her husband, Norwin Cargo. Curt also enjoyed fishing, bowling and golfing.

He is survived by his son, Dennis E. Farringer and his wife Toula, Hermitage; his daughter, Joanne Farringer and her partner Anthony Martin, Las Cruces, N.M.; his son, Craig Farringer, Sharon; and six grandchildren, nine nephews and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his eldest son, Curtis E. Farringer; his brother, Harry Farringer; and his two sisters, Alice Mitcheltree and Viola Stoops.

He will be greatly missed by those closest to him. We will miss his bright smile and twinkling blue eyes, as well as his sense of humor that was so evident, even in his later years.

Curt and his family are very grateful to the staff at The Villas for the special attention and loving care shown to him through his years of residency, and to the wonderful Southern Care Hospice staff during his final days.

His family suggests that anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in his memory to please consider Buhl Park Corp., 715 Hazen Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.
