James Edward Ray

Vietnam vet was active with local veteran groups

- — Mr. Ray was born May 30, 1950, in Sharon, one of 10 children born to Charles E. and Helen Bowman Ray.

He graduated from Brookfield High School.

Jim worked for Syro Steel Inc. on North State Street in Girard, Ohio, a subsidiary of Trinity Industries.

A decorated Vietnam War veteran, he served from 1969 to January 1971 and was honorably discharged with these medals and citations: Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Rifleman and M-60 classification and Sharpshooter Pistol classification.

Jim was proud of his tour of duty and loved his country. He was an active member of many local veterans groups including Veterans of Foreign Wars Shenango Valley Post 1338, Sharon, and Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage; American Legion Post 299, Sharon; AMVETS Post 290, Vienna, Ohio; and Shenango Valley Veterans Honor Guard, Sharon, that consists of members from American Legion Post 299, VFW Post 1338 and Catholic War Veterans Post 1446.

He was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose and belonged to Lodge 55, Farrell.

Jim was a war history buff and was quite knowledgeable of any battle history. He enjoyed classic country music from Conway Twitty to Hank Williams Sr. and old time rock ’n’ roll music. A sports fan, his favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys.

His wife, the former Shari Salatino, whom he married Aug. 8, 1980, survives at home.

He also leaves: his two sons, Edward Herrmann and his wife Angel, Reynolds; and Michael Herrmann and his wife Angel, Sharon; his daughter, Crystal and her husband Danh Huynh, Erie; three grandsons, Tony, Michael and Nico; three granddaughters, Angela, Erika and Alauna; two great-grandsons, Tyler and Hunter; three brothers, Daniel Ray and his wife Pam, Sharon; and Donald Ray and his wife Alice, and Michael Ray, all Hermitage; three sisters, Janice Justice and her husband Robert, Leavittsburg, Ohio; Yvonne Seginak, St. Joseph, Mo.; and Lisa Moherman, Masury; and a sister-in-law, Pam and her husband Rick Sopher, Titusville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles “Tom” Ray; and two sisters, Margaret “Peg” McGee and Patricia “Patt” Campion Root.
