Jacqueline H. Powers Elford

Homemaker, pastor’s wife was active at senior center


- — Jacqueline H. Powers Elford, formerly of the Lakeview area, passed away at 8:14 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, of natural causes. She was 93.

Mrs. Elford was born April 8, 1920, in Bucyrus, Ohio, to Dr. Fred Harwood Powers and Cora Agnes Sprecher Powers.

She was National Honor Society alumna of Rochester (Minn.) High School, attended Rochester Junior College and graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree from Hamlin University, St. Paul, Minn.

She married the Rev. Grant H. Elford on March 2, 1943; he preceded her in death in April 1995.

In her early years, she was an active church member and homemaker.

After moving to Phoenix in 1963, Mrs. Elford worked at John C. Lincoln Hospital and Damon Laboratories in the medical purchasing departments. She then was employed in the mental health department of the State of Arizona and retired from that position in 1992.

She was a member of Job’s Daughters, Order of the Eastern Star, Phi Sigma Alpha Sorority and The Mercedes Benz Club of America.

Her interests and hobbies through the years included church choir and youth advisor, baking, sewing and ceramics. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and Scrabble.

For many years, Mrs. Elford participated in Mercedes Benz Club road rallies with her husband.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and loved animals, especially dogs and cats.

In 1999, she moved to Pennsylvania to live with her daughter Barbara and son-in-law, Richard Snyder. In August 2007, she moved to Lakeview Manor Apartments in Stoneboro and most recently was a resident at Greystone Country Estates in Fredonia.

She was active with the McQuiston Center by the Park in Sandy Lake for many years. She attended Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are: her daughters, Jeanette H. Dougherty, Phoenix; and Barbara A Snyder and her husband Richard, Sandy Lake; three granddaughters, Kimberly Elford Wiley, Monroeville; Cynthia Remington and her companion Robert, Phoenix; and Cassandra Tabler and her husband Roger, Bethel Park; a grandson, Tod Elford and his wife Brandy, Utica, Venango County; 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Ellen Elford, Phoenix; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jonathan H. Elford, in July 2006; a half sister, Margaret Parrish; and a sister, Bettina Mellinger.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to McQuiston Center by the Park, Box 273, Sandy Lake, PA 16145.

Service and interment: Jacqueline requested cremation and private services for the family at a later date.
