Sandra J. McDowell

Retired nurse of Mercer was 4-H supporter


- — Sandra J. McDowell of Mercer passed away peacefully at 4:56 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, in Avalon Springs, Coolspring Township, after a brief illness. She was 77.

Born Jan. 17, 1937, in Youngstown, Mrs. McDowell was a daughter of E. George and Cecelia W. Davis Evans.

She was a 1955 graduate of Lakeview High School and an alumna of Jameson Hospital School of Nursing, New Castle.

As a registered nurse, Mrs. McDowell began working for the former Grove City Hospital, many years with Dr. James C. File, Stoneboro, and Dr. Wilson of Slippery Rock. She subsequently retired from the former Greenville Hospital.

In early years, she was a member of the Rainbow Girls and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 110, Stoneboro. Through the years, Sandra was a strong supporter of Mercer County 4-H. She enjoyed quilting, knitting and baking and frequently entered many of her baked goods in the Stoneboro Fair through the years.

Most of all, she loved her family and grandchildren and enjoyed supporting many of their activities.

Her husband, Robert E. McDowell, whom she married Sept. 17, 1958, preceded her in death Oct. 24, 1977.

Survivors include three daughters, Amy L. Colpetzer and her husband Thomas, Greenville; Jean Ann Dean and her husband Bryan, New Castle; and Nancy L. McDowell, Mercer; a son, Scott E. McDowell and his wife Lisa, Boiling Springs, Pa.; and eight grandchildren, Sally Ann Oakes, George Colpetzer, Jonathan McDowell, Natalie McDowell, Nathan McDowell, Wyatt Dean and twins, Angus and Abe Dean.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a companion, W. Paul Slater.

Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday (2-7-14) in SCOTT A. BLACK FUNERAL HOME, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro.

Service: Funeral and committal service at 11 a.m. Saturday (2-8-14) in the funeral home with the Rev. Robert B. McCrumb, retired minister and family friend, officiating.

Interment: Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Jackson Township.
