Fredonia man, insurance agent served in community

- — Leland C. King of Bend Hill Road, Fredonia, passed away at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2013, in his residence with his family by his side after an extended illness. He was 89.

Mr. King was born July 23, 1924, in Mercer County, the ninth child of William King and Minta Mae McCormick King.

In 1942, he graduated from the former Fredonia-Delaware High School and had attended short courses in animal husbandry at Penn State.

Leland had worked at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Plant in Akron following his graduation in 1942. He then worked with Meade Turner for several years on his dairy farm and peddled milk with a horse and wagon in the Fredonia area. In 1947, he went to work for C. J. Semple, industrial coal dealer, as a farm manager at Woodcrest Farms, the homestead that he and his wife purchased and where they currently resided.

In 1963, Leland became an insurance agent for Farm Family and, in 1966, began the Leland King Insurance Agency, Mercer.

Leland was active and held offices in many associations throughout his life such as the Berkshire Swine Association and Aberdeen Angus Association, and was a charter member of Fredonia Lions Club and the former Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Fredonia.

He was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Hebron Lodge 575, Coolspring Township; Scottish Rite’s New Castle Consistory; and Zem Zem Shrine of Erie. He had been a member of Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. King was past president of Mercer Chamber of Commerce and Mercer Rotary Club and had served with the Mercer United Way Campaign.

During his years in business, he served on the board of directors of the former McDowell Bank, Sharon.

Leland was a lifelong member of Fredonia Presbyterian Church and served first as a custodian in his youth and later as a trustee and elder. He also served as chairman of the building committee for the addition of its Beatty Social Hall.

On Aug. 17, 1951, he married his nurse, the former Mary Lou Eakin, at First Baptist Church, New Castle.

He and his wife loved to travel and had the opportunity of visiting all but three of the states as well as several European countries, the Caribbean, Canada and Mexico. In addition, he and Mary Lou went on numerous fishing trips.

He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in sports and music events, which kept him busy.

Leland is survived by: his wife of 62 years, Mary Lou; his son, Herbert King and his wife Beverley, Hermitage; his daughter, Ruth Elaine King, Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Valerie, wife of John Flickinger, Hermitage; Jessica King, Miami, Fla.; Ian King and his wife Jessica, Savannah, Ga.; Monica King, Hermitage; and Travis King and his fiancée Valerie Messenger, Fredonia; a former daughter-in-law, Ruth Beel; and great-grandsons, Conner and Alex Flickinger, both Hermitage.
