Ex-Pulaski homemaker enjoyed bowling, gardening


- — NEW KENSINGTON – Lillian E. Shaffer of New Kensington, formerly of Pulaski, passed away Sunday afternoon, Feb. 9, 2014, in Logan House, New Kensington. She was 95.

Mrs. Shaffer was born Dec. 17, 1918, in Pittsburgh to Earl John and Elenore Keller Shuler.

Lillian was a homemaker who took great pleasure in her cooking and baking for her family. In her youth, she was a leader of Girl Scouts.

She enjoyed her bowling league and gardening. In fact, she was such an avid gardener that she would rototill her own garden.

Many years ago, Lillian made wooden baskets used by local funeral homes. Just recently at Logan House, she learned to do crafts. Her son said that he never heard his mother complain.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold W. Shaffer; three daughters, Katherine C. Shaffer, Lois Ann Nail and Viola Mae Shaffer; two brothers, Earl and Clarence; and a sister, Viola Gbur.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her son, Harold J. Shaffer and his wife Virginia “Dee” Shaffer, Lower Burrell; and five grandchildren, a great-grandson and a great-great-granddaughter.

Calling hours: Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday (2-12-14) in FRANK F. GIGLER FUNERAL HOME, 2877 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell, Pa.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday (2-13-14) in the funeral home with the Rev. Ken Foust officiating.

Burial: Private in Evergreen Cemetery, New Bedford.
