Joan Elizabeth Hilko

Lutheran church member was Grimm’s seamstress

- — A funeral service will be held Thursday for Joan Elizabeth Hilko of Greenville, formerly of Sharpsville. She passed away from Alzheimer’s disease at 9:55 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, in St. Paul’s, West Salem Township. She was 84.

Mrs. Hilko was born Dec. 30, 1929, in Sharon to Harvey and Gladys Minner Fleet.

She graduated from the former Fredonia High School, class of 1947.

Joan worked as a seamstress for Grimm’s Awnings for 27 years until her retirement in 1994.

As a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hermitage, Joan belonged to its Dorcas Society.

She was a member of the South Pymatuning Early Birds bowling league and was a talented artist who enjoyed painting, flower gardening and crafts. In her younger years, she enjoyed water skiing, boating and bowling.

Joan enjoyed traveling to Texas and Florida. She loved time spent with her family and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.

On Jan. 8, 1949, she married her husband, William P. Hilko Sr., who passed away Oct. 10, 2010.

Joan is survived by: her daughter, Linda Bateman, Jamestown; a son, William P. Hilko Jr. and his wife Sylvia, Delaware Township; two brothers, Harvey Fleet and his wife Debbie, Jupiter, Fla.; and Paul Fleet and his wife Peg, Texas; four grandchildren, William P. Hilko III, Joshua Hilko, Blair Bateman and Mark Bateman; and five great-grandchildren, Brick Bateman, Katie Bateman, Charlotte Bateman, Matthew Hilko and Jonathan Hilko.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her father, Harvey Fleet; mother, Gladys Fleet; and granddaughter, Bonnie Hilko.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s department of St. Paul’s, 339 E. Jamestown Road, Greenville, PA 16125.
