St. Joseph’s member worked 51 years for WE

- — Daniel H. Duffy of Euclid Avenue, Sharon, passed away peacefully at 1:58 a.m. Monday (2-10-14) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. He was 86.

Mr. Duffy was born April 23, 1927 in Sharon, one of nine children born to John and Helen Walsh Duffy.

A lifelong city resident, he graduated from the former Sacred Heart Elementary School on Sharon’s West Hill and was a member of Sharon High School’s graduating class of 1945.

As a young man, he worked for a short while at the former Biggin’s Dairy in downtown Sharon and for Erie Railroad.

A decorated veteran of World War II, he served in the American and Pacific theater of operations (Okinawa) and was honorably discharged in 1946 with several medals and citations including the World War II Victory Medal.

After his tour of duty, he began working at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. His career at Westinghouse began in 1947 and spanned 51 years. He was a quality control inspector at the Sharon plant until 1984. He worked at Westinghouse from 1984 until 1992 in Muncie, Ind., and from 1992 to 1995 in Charleston, S.C. He retired as a Westinghouse field service agent in 1998.

He loved a good round of golf and was a familiar face at Hickory VFW Golf Course, where he was a starter for many years.

He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Church and served on the church council.

His wife, the former Mary Joanne Shatto, whom he married Sept. 2, 1950, passed away Dec. 27, 1971.

He leaves: his children, Timothy J. Duffy and his wife Sandra, West Middlesex; Brian J. Duffy and his wife Denise, Alliance, Ohio; Mary Jude Duffy Black and her husband David, Sharon; and Nancy E. Duffy, Jerome, Idaho; and seven grandchildren, Nicole, Dalylah, Brittany, Tyler, Derek, Daniel and Alex. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Gaines, Shawnee Mission, Kan.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Sarah K. Duffy, Patricia A. Zeitler and Frances J. Kopetsky; and four brothers, James, Joseph, Robert and John Duffy.

In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in his memory to please consider the Prince of Peace Center, 502 Darr Ave., Farrell, PA 16121.
