Michael Varso

Byzantine church member was Westinghouse retiree


- — Michael Varso of Morefield Road, Hermitage, passed away at 2:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. He was 84.

Mr. Varso was born Aug. 11, 1929, in Sharon to John and Anna Lazor Varso.

He was a graduate of Sharpsville High School.

For 30 years until his retirement, Michael worked as a craneman for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

Michael was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Hermitage.

He enjoyed golfing and was a fan of Duke University basketball, the Cleveland Browns and high school football. He also liked to travel.

Michael is survived by: two nieces, Mary Anne Bajorek, Sharpsville; and Martha Kelley, Hermitage; three nephews, John P. Chovan and his wife Barb, Hubbard; Rick Chovan and his wife Linda, New Sewickley Township, Pa.; and Bob Chovan and his wife Patti, Sharpsville; a brother-in-law, John Chovan, Sharpsville; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Chovan and Martha Varso; and brothers, John Varso and John Paul Varso.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Michael Varso to St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church Building Fund, 2230 Highland Road, or Sharon Regional Health System Hospice, 2320 Highland Road, both Hermitage, PA 16148.
