Robert E. Grossman

Notre Dame member worked in food industry

- — Robert E. Grossman of Hermitage passed away with his family by his side at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, after an extended illness. He was 84.

Mr. Grossman was born July 15, 1929, in Decatur, Ill., a son of Anthony “Bud” Grossman and Sylvia Copsey Grossman.

He was a graduate of St. Theresa’s Catholic High School in Decatur. Mr. Grossman also had various training in the food industry from a number of technical schools.

Robert served his country during the Korean conflict from 1951 to 1952. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1952 and transferred to the Army Reserves from 1952 to 1955.

Mr. Grossman and his wife owned and operated Grossman’s Restaurant in Ellwood City for many years. Throughout his life, he held various positions in the food service industry, such as vice president of operations, district and regional manager, and was an innkeeper at a number of restaurants and hotels.

He was an active member of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage; was instrumental in the Ellwood City School Boosters; and was active in Boy Scouts of America throughout Mississippi, Ohio and Illinois.

Later in life, Robert enjoyed painting and going camping at the family’s cabin in Tionesta. Most importantly, he cherished the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.  

He is survived by: his loving wife, the former Colleen Munie, whom he married March 26, 1951; five children, Michelle Judy, Youngstown; Jean Marie and her husband Daniel Lamb, Austintown, Ohio; Melissa and her husband Robert Thomas, Hermitage; Brian and his wife Mary Grossman, Tallmadge, Ohio; and Steven and his wife Lauren Grossman, Beaver, Pa.; a sister, Colleen Dobbs, Phoenix; a brother, Donald Grossman, Decatur; 13 grandchildren, Cathy, Tammy, Jennifer, Danielle, Randi, Kimberly, Jessica, Lauren, Bobby, Megan, Conlan, Ben and Sam; and nine great-grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Ruth Grossman.

The family requests anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in Robert’s name to please say a Mass in his honor.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 a.m. Friday (2-21-14) in Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, with the Rev. Jeffery J. Noble, pastor, as celebrant. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church for Mass. Full military honors will be rendered by the honor guard from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, West Middlesex, and American Legion Post 432, Wheatland.

Interment: Castleview Cemetery, New Castle.
