Joseph M. Sandor

POW was GATX retiree, mixologist active in church

- — Joseph M. Sandor, formerly of Wintergreen Drive, Brookfield, passed away early Saturday morning (2-22-14) in Whispering Oaks, Hermitage. He was 92.

Mr. Sandor was born Dec. 27, 1921, in Lorain, Ohio, a son of the late Michael and Mary Redl Sandor.  

He was a 1939 graduate of Sharon High School.

A decorated war veteran, Mr. Sandor served with the Army during World War II in the African, Sicilian, and Italian campaigns. Captured at the Battle of Cassino, he was a prisoner of war for two years and was finally able to escape on his third attempt. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, and numerous other citations and combat ribbons. He was honored to be a member of the Warren Chapter of the Mahoning Valley Ex-POWs.

Mr. Sandor retired in 1984 from the former General American Transportation Corp., Masury, where he was employed for 37 years. During the span of his employment with GATX, he worked as a controller, purchasing agent and quality control inspector.

For many years, he was also a mixologist and managed the bar services at the Golden Lion Restaurant in the former Shenango Inn, Sharon; the Sheraton Inn, West Middlesex; and Tiffany Manor and Yankee Run, both Brookfield.

Early in his life he was employed by PIW, Pet Iron Works.

Joe was an active member of Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon, where he established the church’s first choir, served as the choir director, and was a vocalist for funerals and weddings. For many years he also served as a lector for weekly Masses.

Joe enjoyed vegetable gardening and sharing his yield with his friends and family. He also enjoyed many sports including bowling with his wife and friends in the church league.

Joe was a loving husband, a proud father, and devoted grandfather.

Surviving is: his wife of nearly 65 years, the former Helen I. Tarko, whom he married July 2, 1949; a daughter, Diane Franklin and her husband Mark; a son, Richard J. Sandor and his wife Jill, all Rochester, N.Y.; a brother, Louis Sandor, Lancaster, Ohio; three grandchildren, David and Kristin Sandor, and Matthew Franklin (Kathleen); and caring nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by an infant sister; a sister, Mary Chaklos; and two brothers, William Albert Sandor and Michael Sandor.

Funeral: Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Wednesday (2-26-14) in Church of the Sacred Heart, 40 S. Irvine Ave., Sharon, with the Rev. Henry Andrae, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment: Brookfield Township Cemetery with military honors.
