Robert McLaren

Native of Scotland was Sharon post office retiree

- — Robert McLaren of Lincoln Street, Sharon, passed away at 6:26 a.m. Saturday (2-22-14) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 90.

Robert was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Glasgow, Scotland, a son of David and Barbara Spence McLaren. In 1927 Robert and his family moved to New Castle. His mother passed away after residing in New Castle for less than a year. Robert was raised by his dad, who married Elizabeth Spence a few years later. The family then moved to Sharon.

Bob was a 1941 graduate of Sharon High School.

A World War II veteran, he joined the Navy in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1945.

Mr. McLaren retired in 1985 after 30 years of employment with the U.S. Postal Service, where he was a clerk in the Sharon office.

Bob was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church since 1948.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6166 in Hermitage. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and life member of the New Castle Scottish Rite Consistory. He was a member of Sharon Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons No. 668 and Hermitage Lodge F&AM No. 810. Bob was also a former member of the El Bika Grotto, with which he was part of the Legion of Honor and a clown (Jocko) for over 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Cline McLaren, whom he married March 13, 1946; a son, Larry and his wife Joni McLaren; two great-grandchildren, Willow and Danica Wagner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by four brothers, Bill, David, John and James; and five sisters, Susan, Helen, Margaret, Pauline, and Betty.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Sharon.
