Lawrence ‘Sonny’ Conover

B&LE retiree, gardener built cabin, rebuilt home


- — Lawrence “Sonny” Conover of Perrine Road, Hadley, died in his home Feb. 24, 2014. He was 78.

Mr. Conover was born May 1, 1935 in Greenville to the late Wilton H. and Estella Krouse Conover.

Mr. Conover attended the former Penn High School in Greenville.

He retired from Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad, Greenville, in 1978.

Sonny attended Sheakleyville Methodist Church. He was a  member of the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Conover was an avid hunter who loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved spending time at his log cabin in the woods that he built by hand himself. As a craftsman, he was able to rebuild by hand his family’s home.  

He also was an avid gardener so that he could share the fruits of his labor with family and friends. His hobbies were building wooden gunstocks and woodworking in general, and he loved reading about the Civil War.

Sonny married his wife, Beatrice Brindle, on Nov. 19, 1955. She survives at home.

He is also survived by three sons, David Lee and his wife Barbara Conover, Hadley; Bryon Vance Conover, Greenville; and Larry James Conover, Atlantic; three sisters, Geraldine McAnich, Greenville; Rachel Hannash, Greenville; and Harriet Reed, South Carolina; a brother, George Albert, Winter Haven, Fla.; four grandchildren, Emily, Jessica, Ryon and Amanda; six great-grandchildren, Dylan, Zoey, Collier, Aiden, Sophie and Maverick.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Caroline Becker; and three brothers, Wilton Howard, Robert Clarance and Donald Conover.

Calling hours: 2 p.m. to time of service Saturday (3-1-14) in Robert L Snyder Funeral Ltd., 3223 Perry Highway, Sheakleyville.

Service: Funeral service at 4 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Tim Bowser of Sheakleyville Methodist Church officiating.

Interment: Private.
