---- — Paul D. Gustas Sr., formerly of Hamilton Avenue, Farrell,  passed away at 9:59 a.m. Thursday, June 13, 2013, in John XXIII Home, Hermitage, where he was a resident for the past 1è years. He was 76.

Mr. Gustas was born Jan. 25, 1937, in Farrell, a son of Joseph and Elizabeth Liptak Gustas.

As a lifelong area resident, he was a 1955 graduate of Farrell High School, where he was a standout athlete. Paul was a member of the 1954 Farrell High basketball team that won the state championship under legendary coach Ed McCluskey. The following year his team beat Philadelphia’s Overbrook High School, which included Wilt Chamberlain.

Paul was also a football letterman at Farrell High, played American Legion baseball and attended Mount Union College, Alliance Ohio, where he played on the basketball team.

Paul retired as a painter from the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant, where he was employed for 35 years.

He was a lifetime member of the former St. Ann’s Church and a current member of Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann’s Church, both Farrell.

He belonged to the Italian and Slovak homes and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, all Farrell.

Gus, as he was known to many, was part of the “Wallis Gang,” with whom he enjoyed going to camp in the Allegheny Mountains.

He was an avid New York Yankees and Washington Redskins fan and, during the 1970s, coached basketball at the former St. Ann Parochial Grade School, and baseball for the Lions in Farrell Little League.

A skilled bocce player, among others he built the original courts at the Farrell VFW. Fishing was another pastime.

Although very competitive, Paul was a gentleman who enjoyed life. His happy demeanor will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.

Surviving are a daughter, Kristine L. Derrick and her companion Kenny Thompson, Fredonia; two sons, Paul D. Gustas Jr. and his wife Jane; and David J. Gustas and his wife Trista, all Hermitage; nine grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty McNally, Youngstown; and Tressa Wasilewski, Hermitage.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Pauline Good Nebbe; and a brother, Joseph Gustas.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Tuesday (6-18-13) in Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann’s Church, Farrell, with the Rev. Monsignor Charles S. Murcko, retired priest, as celebrant.

Interment: St. Ann’s Cemetery, Hermitage.
