Martin ‘Marty’ Banjak

Sawhill worker, craftsman earned Purple Heart

---- — A funeral service will be held Monday for Martin “Marty” Banjak of Hermitage. He passed away unexpectedly at 1:51 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013, in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 92.

Mr. Banjak was born Oct. 16, 1920, in Farrell, a son of George (Bandzak) Banjak and Anna Stracka Banjak.

He was a 1940 graduate of Farrell High School.

Mr. Banjak then went on to serve in the U.S. Army’s 35th Infantry Division in the European theater during World War II, earning a Purple Heart.

Marty had worked as a die setter at the former Sawhill Tube in Sharon, where he was employed for more than 40 years.

As a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hermitage, he served on the property committee.

He was a member of Sokol USA of Farrell and was past president of the Sawhill Retirees Group. Marty was a very talented woodworker, having made several doll houses and train sets. He enjoyed traveling and dancing.

His wife, the former Betty Jane Smith, whom he married Oct. 20, 1945, survives at home.

He is also survived by a daughter, Barbara Jean Kush and her husband Richard, Chandler, Ariz.; two sons, Richard Banjak and his wife Carolyn, Gardeners, Pa.; and Allan Banjak and his wife Lisa, Carlisle, Pa.; four grandchildren, Ali Banjak, Jeffrey Kush, Christopher Kush and his wife Kim, and Douglas Banjak; and two great-granddaughters, Carli and Ashlee Kush.

Besides his parents, Marty was preceded in death by his grandson, Chad Banjak; two sisters, Anna Krispinsky and Mary Zets; and four brothers, Andrew, Steve, George and John Banjak.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 3325 Morefield Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.

Calling hours: Friends are invited to call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday (6-16-13) in HAROLD W. STEVENSON FUNERAL HOME, 264 E. State St., Sharon; and 10 a.m. to time of service Monday (6-17-13) in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hermitage. Condolences to the family may be expressed by visiting stevensonfuneralhome.net

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday in the church.

Interment: Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Hermitage.
